Temptations abound for new stars
Stephen Garcia's education has begun. One month after he arrived on USC's campus, it has taken him, grabbed him by the ponytail and shoved him into his most important class: Decisions 101.
The professors -- Gamecocks football coach Steve Spurrier, Stephen Garcia's teammates, the public -- already have begun grading him. They are sizing him up and dressing him down, shaking their heads in disappointment and wondering whether the 19-year-old freshman quarterback is prepared for the wave of knowledge they all thought he had braced himself for.
Perhaps he had. Perhaps his arrest in Five Points during the early-morning hours last Saturday was a fluke, a one-time deal he most certainly would not repeat. Hours after he was charged with drunkenness and failure to stop on police command, Stephen Garcia told a Columbia judge he had never been arrested in his home state of Florida.
