Gamecocks Could Turn To Garcia
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier hasn't decided who will start at quarterback Saturday against UAB.
Spurrier says he will think long and hard about jarring his team from its offensive rut by giving Jefferson High graduate Stephen Garcia the ball. He says the team has to see at some point what the redshirt freshman can do.
Tommy Beecher got the start in the opener against North Carolina State but threw four interceptions. Chris Smelley has started since then, but he turned the ball over three times and struggled to get South Carolina into the end zone in a 23-13 win Saturday over Wofford.
Spurrier says if Garcia can show he can run the offense, he will get to be the Gamecocks' third starting quarterback this year.
